TENNESSEE ADVANCED HEALTHCARE DIRECTIVES
In Tennessee there are two different types of advanced healthcare directives that every person should have their
lawyer prepare to protect their wishes should they be in a position that they are unable to make decisions themselves.
1. Living Will - This document tells your healthcare provider your specific wishes and clearly
defines what type of care you would want and the measures that your healcare provider
should and should not employ. This would include, but not be limited to, feeding tubes,
pain medication, amputation of limbs, blood transfusion, and CPR.
2. Durable Healthcare Power of Attorney - This document gives the power to make
healthcare decisions to another person should you not be able to make those decisions
due to incapacity. This would cover any decisions not expressly discussed in your
living will.
